This week I will discuss web applications.

Application Development

What does it take to develop a good computer application? You need:
  1. Clear vision of what the application will do
  2. Written description of the information or data that will be managed
  3. User interface that people can understand
  4. Platform to run the application
Application development has not changed at this fundamental level since the days of the mainframe in the 1960's. Given these items, you can develop a very efficient and profitable application for you business.

Web Applications

The Internet provides a platform to make an application more useful. By developing applications with web technologies, your application is available on the company network and anywhere in the world. In the past, if you wanted to access your business applications away from the office you had to bring it with you via a notebook computer. Also, if you wanted to provide an application to customers or business partners you had to send the application and data to them with CDROM or other media. Since you were always working with copies, your application and data could be out of date, and you had to constantly synchronize everything. Businesses have really struggled with this over the years. Web applications solve these problems by having only one copy of the application and data available over the Internet anywhere in the world. Every user is always getting the latest information! On the cost side, web applications can be developed for the same cost or cheaper than standard Windows applications. Early web applications lacked some of the ease of use features of Windows applications. Today, these features are available in the latest generation of web browsers.

I recommend you develop all new applications using the web and you will be well positioned for the future.

Radio Show Note

On the Houston Business Show this week we talked about the new mobile PC's. These are full power PC's that you can take anywhere like a notebook but they are the size of an index card and about 1 inch thick. You can read about these paperback size PC's at OQO and FlipStart.

Next week, I will discuss new trends in IT hardware.
